The Costs of Senior Care Options When planning for our retirement, most of us allocate money into a 401K or another savings program to take advantage of tax write-offs and to make sure we will be able to enjoy a nice lifestyle when we are no longer working from 9 to 5. We imagine using the money to supplement our monthly social security checks to enjoy vacations and other leisure activities while taking advantage of all those senior discounts. The financial company advertisements assist us with the visions of enjoying gardening, sailing and relaxing during our retirement years. They don't show the other side of the reality which includes health problems which accompany aging. Along with a longer...

In Hawaii, where many people come from Asian cultures, multiple generations often live together, and cherishing and respecting elders, a concept called kupuna, is a key value, says Marketing Manager Gwen Trowbridge of Kisco Senior Living. So when the Carlsbad, California-based senior-living residence conceived Ilima at Leihano, a 40-acre CCRC in Kapolei, a suburb of Honolulu, they sought to embrace that connection of ohona (family) by partnering with another developer to build Maile at Leihano, a sister residential community, in which adult children and grandchildren can live near their loved ones. Buildings are designed in the islands' unique architectural style, characterized by outdoor and...

Workers looking to switch careers to an industry which will continue to provide ongoing job opportunities may be interested in exploring employment in senior care. As the population lives longer because of advances in medical technology and as adult children often no longer live in the same city as their aging parents, there are a wide variety of employment opportunities for senior caregivers, nurses, social workers and therapists. The U.S. Labor Department has identified jobs providing care for seniors as one of the top employers in the next decade. As Medicare does not pay for long-term care for seniors and as Medicaid, the health insurance program for very low-income seniors, only pays for...

Today's economy has most over the age of 55 worrying about their retirement nest egg, long term health care, social security viability, living longer and how they'll manage their lifestyle in the future. We'd like to believe we won't ever need to move into an assisted living community or skilled nursing center, however, the statistics are against us. According to the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA), after age 65, Americans have more than a 70% chance of needing some form of long-term care. The reality is that not all people age as gracefully as they would like -- which can have significant financial consequences. Did you know there are approximately 2,200 continuing...

Though we all know the day will come when we need to provide elder care for our elderly relatives, most of us have unanswered questions and are completely unprepared for it. What's the difference between an assisted living facility and a retirement home? Are there facilities that specialize in Alzheimer care and dementia care? How can I know when the time is right and what is available for my parent's or senior family members as I look for senior care facilities that are licensed, appropriate and trustworthy? How to care for aging parents or family members isn't something that is taught in school or commonly discussed in the open. Many families feel it is their obligation to care for a loved one at...

Medication management may be one of the greatest clinical challenges in senior living, where the average resident may take four to six medications a day, or more. Yet the assisted living business has earned a reputation for consistent positive performance in this arena. "A major reason people move into assisted living is that they need help with medications, so it is a service we take very seriously," says Maribeth Bersani, ALFA's senior vice president for public policy. "We are training people, we are monitoring them, we are doing it safely and doing it well." The numbers bear it out. Looking at all medication mistakes with the exception of time errors, assisted living shows an error rate of 8.2...

A senior living community is much more than just a building full of people. It is a caring environment of residents, family members, nurses, caregivers, and staff members. After all, it's the place residents call home, where they have a sense of comfort and security. But then again, it is a building full of people-a physical space designed to create a warm environment, while still allowing for the practical functions critical to delivering high-quality care. Shared spaces, apartments, kitchens, and offices must have efficient climate control. This community also needs systems that support energy-saving lighting and appliances to help cut costs. And it needs cutting-edge building technologies that...

parents and grandparents grow older, you may become concerned about their safety at home. Placing them in an assisted living facility is often considered as an option. However, homecare is an alternative that has many benefits. 1. Seniors who live at home feel more independent than those who live in retirement homes. This sense of independence is important because it helps the elderly maintain their dignity, which is something they often fear losing. The freedom of living at home allows seniors to come and go whenever they please; and meal times are also their choice. 2. Elderly individuals do not have to part with any of their beloved possessions if they continue to live at home. Having the things...

Many older people want to stay in their own homes or at least in the same neighborhood. The maintenance and upkeep of a large family home is not always a practical option, physically and financially. There are a few options that you might want to explore if you are adamant about not moving into a structured retirement facility. Manufactured Mobile Homes are an increasingly attractive choice for older folks. These homes are affordable, energy efficient, spacious and some of the models are designed especially for seniors, utilizing "universal design" features. If zoning...

There are many things in life that can bring on added pressures, stress, and worries. For many people, one of the biggest things on this list is the idea of aging. Sadly, at this point in time, there is no cure for old age. It creeps up on us slowly but surely and before we know it, we are old. Part of the problem with aging is that the little things that we took for granted years ago now seem like such difficult and annoying tasks. One of the hardest things to do at this point in life is to ask for help. Many times, a parent may be embarrassed to ask favors of a child when this should not be the case. However, there are other options available besides family care. There are many retirement...

Lugging heavy grocery bags can be exhausting. Cooking nutritious and balanced meals may prove challenging. Moreover, the long, cold winters and hot, humid summers can make getting out of the house quite problematic. Your parent may be left feeling isolated and alone. When should my parent move to an assisted living facility? Assisted living facilities can be the perfect solution for people who have difficulty performing...

While key elements of today's external economic environment are certainly challenging, the assisted living business and its market fundamentals remain strong. For most senior living companies, 2010 is the year to sharpen strategic focus-laying a solid foundation for a potentially strong future for assisted living- despite being amid the most significant economic recession since the Great Depression. An unemployment rate that hovered around 10 percent toward the end of 2009, a credit crisis, depressed home sales, significant consumer savings/ investment portfolio losses, and low consumer confidence all contributed to a slow-down in business. Early indicators of a modest recovery are gradually...

That is happily now starting to change and today we are seeing the black community take advantage of medical treatments and procedures that were previously unavailable to them. There has also been quite an interest in the popularity of African American laser hair removal and blended cosmetics especially for black people in recent years as well. Many nursing homes and assisted and independent living communities offer nicer living conditions than some new residents are used to and there are continuing care options that will take place right in the person’...

They are fiercely independent and have no interest in moving into retirement communities or nursing homes. This means that a wide range of the aging population is now living independent lives than we have seen in years past. Do all elderly people need medical alert systems? Not necessarily. That doesn't mean that they couldn't all benefit from having them around just that not everyone over the age of 65 actually needs the extra security that a personal emergency response system provides. People at greater risk or in greater need...

The burgeoning senior care market has introduced a slew of new concepts and terms that are easily confused. Many people believe, for example, that life care and continuing care communities are the same thing, and they use these terms interchangeably. However, life care is actually a subset of continuing care. While the offerings may look similar at a glance, don't be fooled. Let's take a look at the differences between the two, beginning with continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). CCRCs vs. Life Care Communities CCRCs offer contractual agreements to people sixty years or older, providing them with a continuum of services, usually on the same campus. These services include independent living...

This form of care is nearly always provided through a spouse or family member at the same time they attempt to accommodate a full-time position, a spouse and children, in addition to several other activities. Long term care is a major concern of American senior citizens and their families. Studies have shown that Americans rank long term care second, behind saving for retirement, when prioritizing financial needs. Unfortunately, many Americans do not want to think about needing long term care and, therefore, fail to plan for it. Others wrongly assume that Medicare or standard health insurance policies will cover the costs of long term care services. As a result of this failure to plan, tens of thousands of Americans are impoverished each year by the costs of long term care. The best time to plan for long term care is before it is needed. As your parents and grandparents grow older, you may become concerned about their safety at home. Placing them in an assisted living facility is often considered as an option. However, homecare is an alternative that has many benefits. 1. Seniors who live at home are able to maintain a level of freedom that would not be possible at an assisted living residence. For many, this freedom is synonymous with maintaining dignity, which is something many individuals fear loosing as they age. Similarly, those who receive homecare can come and go as they please-for whatever reason. They can also choose their own meal times. 2.
